| Description: | View of Schiehallion from Loch Rannoch, looking east, Perthshire. The perfectly symmetrical peak was used for gravitational experiments by Nevil Maskelyne in 1774. Practical determinations of gravitational force have been made since 1740, one such experiment was by Nevil Maskelyne in 1774. Schiehallion was used because of its symmetrical triangular cross-section and its steeply sloping north and south flanks which permitted Maskalayne to calculate the volume of rock for the experiment. The experiment was to measure the deflection of a plumb line by the mass of the mountain, this was then compared with the attraction for the whole earth for the mass. |
