| Description: | Isle of Jura, Argyllshire. Looking east-north-east. Jura Quartzite of the Paps of Jura. Beinn a' Chaolais (foreground), Beinn an Oir (centre left), Beinn Shiantaidh (background). Note the pale-coloured screes of white quartzite banked against the foot of the hills, and in some cases forming small alluvial cones. The valley bottom is blanketed with peat and heather-clad moundy deposits of morainic material. Most of Jura is composed of the Jura Quartzite formation (Islay Subgroup, Argyll Group, part of the Dalradian Supergroup) which totals more than 4 km. in thickness. The Islay Subgroup is overlain by the Easdale Subgroup, which crops out along the south-eastern coast of Jura. |
