Description: | The mouth of the River Avon cutting Flandrian marine deposits, West Lothian. As relative sea level has fallen over the last few thousand years, the River Avon has cut its channel to the Forth across the flat ground of the Carse Clays. These are marine sediments deposited as former intertidal flats and consist mainly of soft silt, sand and clay. The topography is extremely flat and the area has become the site of numerous industrial plants. The eastern margin of the giant Grangemouth petrochemical complex can be seen on the left bank of the Avon. |
