Description: | Looking south-east from Kinneil Mill gravel-pit towards Linlithgow, West Lothian. Elongate mounds of glaciofluvial sand and gravel. M 9 motorway in foreground. Such deposits are very valuable sources of building sand and aggregate, seen here being worked on a commercial scale. Easy access to local markets is assisted by the good road network in West Lothian. The huge amounts of meltwater released during the retreat of the glaciers in the late Devensian (c.10,000+ years ago) were able to deposit vast spreads of glaciofluvial sand and gravel. The axes of the elongate ridges are oriented parallel to the direction of ice/water flow. |
