Description: | Felsite laccolith of Tinto Hill, Symington, Lanarkshire. The prominent hill of Tinto is composed of an igneous intrusion in the form of a laccolith which is intruded into the sandstones and conglomerates of the Greywacke Conglomerate Formation, Lanark Group (formerly Lower Old Red Sandstone), of Lower Devonian age. A laccolith is a generally circular to oval-shaped sill-like intrusion in the form of a lens, with its lower surface flat and the rocks above pushed up to form a shallow dome. |
