Description: | West coast of Esha Ness, looking north-east to Esha Ness lighthouse, Shetland Isles. Cliffs at Esha Ness. Vertical cliffs of Old Red Sandstone age coarse andesitic agglomerate. Island of Muckle Ossa in background. Spectacular cliffs formed from the bedded andesitic agglomerate. The high vertical cliffs are the product of rapid erosion caused by the combination of a drowned landscape and very powerful storms and the resulting marine erosion. The rapid erosion does not allow any sub-aerial erosion which would tend to form a more gently sloped cliff. |
