Description: The Northmaven Plutonic Complex is of post-Caledonian Orogeny age, the evidence for this is the lack of foliation in the rocks. It contrasts with the eastern Shetland late-orogenic complexes that are intruded into metamorphic rocks and that show weak foliation in places, this indicates that the latter were emplaced before the Caledonian tectonic activity had ceased. Foliation is the parallel orientation of platy minerals. This orientation occurs when the igneous or metamorphic rocks have undergone movement while still in a plastic state. Coastal scenery showing cliffs of granite of the Northmaven Plutonic Complex in the foreground. The cliffs in the background are formed of the metasediments of the Hillswick peninsula.
