Description: Fair Isle, Bu Ness, north face of Sloagar, Shetland Isles. Rhythmic alternation of sandstone and shale/siltstone units in Bu Ness Formation. The headland of Bu Ness on the east coast of Fair Isle comprises medium-grained sandstone in beds up to 9 metres thick. They are cross-bedded and alternate with much thinner beds of siltstone and mudstone. The strata have a rhythmic character and were probably deposited by a meandering river over an alluvial plane. Fossilized remains of plants and fish have been found in the mudstones and siltstones indicating a middle Devonian age. At Sloagar the beds dip to the south-east (right) at 65 degrees and erosion by wave action has produced caves controlled by the removal of mudstone and siltstone leaving the more resistant beds of sandstone. The small island of Fair Isle is situated half-way between Shetland and Orkney, 24 miles from Sumburgh Head. It is 3.5 miles long from north to south and 1.5 miles wide. It rises to a height of 712 ft. (217 m.). Fine cliffs are found on the north and west sides and there are many caverns, geos, stacks and arches.
