Description: | Fair Isle, west coast, looking north from north-east coast of Ler Ness to Tower of Ward Hill and Dronga, Shetland Isles. Steeply inclined Old Red Sandstone with some shale-siltstone bands. The rocks trend north-east - south-west. The west coast of Fair Isle is exposed to the full force of storms in the North Atlantic Ocean leading to the formation of spectacular cliffs. The irregularities in the cliffs' profile are due to breakage along bedding planes dipping steeply to the south-east (right) and also joints and minor faults in hard sandstone of Devonian age (Old Red Sandstone). The small island of Fair Isle is situated half-way between Shetland and Orkney, 24 miles from Sumburgh Head. It is 3.5 miles long from north to south and 1.5 miles wide. It rises to a height of 712 ft. (217 m.). Fine cliffs are found on the north and west sides and there are many caverns, geos, stacks and arches. |
