Description: Vertical strata on wave-cut platform at Burnmouth Harbour, looking north, 3 km. south of Eyemouth, Berwickshire. These are vertical strata of the Lower Carboniferous 'Cementstone Group' downfaulted against the Silurian rocks which form the cliffs in the distance. These are generally much harder than the Carboniferous rocks, as illustrated by their difference in topography. The cyclic sedimentation in the Carboniferous strata, with alternation of sandstone, shale and cementstone, is well picked out by differential weathering on the wave-cut platform. The steep attitude of the strata is probably due to drag on the fault which runs along the base of the cliffs, with downthrow to the seaward or east side. These strata at Burnmouth are the northernmost representatives of the thick Carboniferous succession in the Northumberland Basin.
