Caption: Garleton Hills, Craigy Hill, East Lothian.
Description: Garleton Hills, Craigy Hill, East Lothian. Lower Carboniferous trachyte lava flow at the top of the Garleton Hills Volcanic Formation, Strathclyde Group. The rock is commonly rotted and well jointed and tends to weather into small fragments. These fall to the base of the cliff forming the scree slope below, as seen in the photograph. The Midland Valley of Scotland was quite active volcanically during the early Carboniferous period, with huge volumes of lava erupted. In the western part of the Midland Valley this was almost wholly basaltic in composition whereas in the east, some trachytic flows occur, especially in the area north and east of Haddington.
