Part of a panorama with D00475. Showing Arthur's Seat, volcanic rocks of Lion's Head and Lion's Haunch vents and teschenite sill of Salisbury Craigs. There are several volcanic vents which represent the feeders for the volcano, the Lion's Head Vent surrounding the top of Arthur's Seat has an agglomerate filling consisting of coarser and finer layers, stratified with a steep dip inwards. The vent agglomerates are cut by intrusions of basalt which forms the top of the hill. The Lion's Haunch Vent is filled with agglomerates but with lavas at three different levels. Salisbury Craigs is a great sill of analcite-olivine-dolerite (teschenite), it is columnar in part and shows fine-grained chilled margins. It is thought to have formed later than the Arthur's Seat volcanism. |
