Description: | Ayres of Swinister', Dales Voe, looking north-east from south of Rugg, Mainland, Shetland Isles. The inland ayre is in two bars separated by shallow tidal water. Along many parts of the coast of Shetland one finds long narrow spits of shingle or sand which are known locally as 'ayres'. Most of these are formed across a shallow bay or across a voe, usually near its landward end, cutting off, either partly or completely, a sheet of water from the sea. The three ayres which join the island of Fora Ness to the Mainland are good examples of ayres which join off-shore isles to a larger island. Ayres of this type are classified as tombolos. |
