Caption: | The Burning Mound. This is composed of Shales, iron pyrites and cement stones. Excursion to Lyme Regis, May 30th 1914. |
Description: | This so called 'volcano' took fire in 1908. Rapid decomposition of the Iron Pyrites induced by a particularly wet season acting on clay with much inflammable (butuminous) matter in its composition is supposed to account for the phenomenon. Added note: About 1/2 mile N.E. of Lyme Church. |
