| Description: | Holes of Scraada, Eshaness, Mainland, Shetland Isles. Old Shetland Mill in front of hole. A very long cave has been eroded into the base of a cliff facing the full force of Atlantic waves. The cliff consists of a horizontal flow of mugearitic basalt lava and the line of the cave is controlled by vertical joints. The roof of the innermost part of the cave became unstable and collapsed leaving a large hole connected to the sea by a subterranean passage. A stream which supplied a former water mill drains into the hole. This stream had a different course towards the north-west but has now been 'captured' by the cave. |
