Description: Much of the Ronas Hill area is covered by abundant loose blocks derived from the underlying granite. Frost action during the period following the retreat of the ice at the end of the Devensian led to the development of blockfields (felsenmeere) in high plateau areas such as the Beorgs of Skelberry to the north-east of Ronas Hill. The granite is part of the larger Northmaven Plutonic Complex, a post-orogenic complex of Caledonian Orogeny age. Fields of granite blocks, characteristic of the Ronas Hill granite area. Such litters of boulders are presumably due to frost riving, followed by solifluction or storm sweeping of the fine disintegrated material.
