Description: | North of Neap of Skea, Shetland Isles. Mullion structure of quartzite in mica-schist: close-up of steep folds in a series of interlayered rocks. Folds developed in interbedded quartzite (metamorphosed sandstone) and mica-schist (metamorphosed mudstone). The folds developed as the layered rocks, under high temperature and pressure were shortened parallel to the layering. Under these conditions quartzite is less ductile than mica-schist and the folds acquire a characteristic cuspate-lobate shape. The rocks in the foreground have broken parallel to the layering revealing rounded (lobate) antiformal folds of the upper surface of a bed of quartzite, separated from each other by narrow, sharp-crested (cuspate) synformal folds with 'nipped-in' cores of mica-schist. The result is a linear structure (fold mullions) resembling the appearance of the clustered columns which support the arches of mullioned windows in Gothic churches. |
