Description: | Old quarry, 550 m. at 260 degrees (west-south-west) from Greendykes, Uphall, Midlothian. Large hollow in the glaciated surface of a teschenite sill at the top of the quarry showing the general smoothing and polishing effect of the passage of glaciers over a rock pavement. At the same time as sharp projections are rounded off, rock boulders held within the ice are used as tools to gouge and groove the rock so that the surface is covered in striae parallel to the direction of ice movement. Markings such as striae are characteristic features of glaciated terranes. |
