Description: Cauldimerry Quarry, 730 m. east of Parkley Place, Linlithgow, Midlothian. Dolerite dykes. Quarry excavated into hard quartz-dolerite dykes which are intruded into vent agglomerate. The latter rock forms the walls of the quarry. Central Scotland has an abundance of hard igneous rocks such as basalt, dolerite and felsite, with many good outcrops scattered throughout the Midland Valley. This is where the bulk of the population resides and therefore generates the main demand for aggregates. Being very heavy in relation to its value, transport costs for building sand, gravel and rock aggregate are always a significant factor in the economics of quarrying.
