Description: | A view from Meall a' Bhainne looking north-north-west across Loch Shiel, up Glen Finnan towards Sgurr Thuilm and Sgurr nan Coireachan, Inverness-shire. Glenfinnan village and monument are situated on the lochside. The underlying rocks in the area are the north-east - south-west trending Glenfinnan Division of the Precambrian Moine series. These are a series of metamorphic rocks originally deposited as sandstones and shales in shallow water c. 900 Ma and that have subsequently been metamorphosed, the sandstones to psammites quartz-feldspar granulites and the shales to pelites (mica schists). The rocks in the cliffs in the foreground are mainly psammites while in the area beyond the loch and in the mountains the Glenfinnan Division are typified by pelites and striped and banded rocks. |
