Description: Loch Askaig and the Dark Mile from Druim Glen Ghlaoidh (ridge north of Glenfintaig Lodge) just south of the hill at 1463 ft., Inverness-shire. Overflow channels and delta with a kettle-hole lochan, Blar an Lochain. The Dark Mile is an east-west V-shaped valley cut some 350 ft. deep connecting the Loch Arkaig depression with the Great Glen. It is cut in striped and banded psammite and pelite of the Loch Eil Division of the Precambrian Moine series. At the east end of the Dark Mile is an alluvial flat terminating in a raised delta at 130 ft. O.D. in Loch Lochy. The kettle-hole lochan in the delta suggests a connection with ice. It has been suggested that at some stage glacier ice standing at the east end of the Loch Arkaig hollow discharged its meltwaters into the Dark Mile and obviously functioned as a meltwater channel. It is further suggested that it is an ancient feature and may well be a former course of the River Arkaig which now flows into Loch Lochy on the extreme left of the photograph.
