Description: View looking west along Dark Mile showing V of the gorge and flat floor of eastern part of valley taken from 55 m. west of the road bridge over the Allt Bhan, Inverness-shire. During the latter part of the retreat of the main mass of ice the Arkaig ice became a separate entity, and as it wasted downwards some meltwater escaped through the Dark Mile while the River Arkaig just to the south was still occupied with dead ice. The Dark Mile is an east-west V-shaped valley cut some 350 ft. deep into striped and banded psammite and pelite of the Loch Eil Division of the Precambrian Moine series.
