| Description: | Mealt Waterfall and Kilt Rock, north Trotternish, Skye, Inverness-shire. Dolerite sills of Tertiary age showing columned jointing are intruded into light-coloured horizontally-bedded sedimentary rocks of the Jurassic Great Estuarine Series. Beyond the Mealt Waterfall the Middle Jurassic Valtos Sandstone Formation is sandwiched between two olivine dolerite sills. The Kilt Rock is composed of the upper sill and shows excellent columnar jointing which can be likened in appearance to the pleats in a kilt. The Mealt Waterfall is the outlet for the nearby Loch Mealt. |
