Description: | Carsaig Bay, looking west, Mull, Argyllshire. Cliffs of Tertiary basalt overlying Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments with raised beaches in foreground. The Bay is noted for the occurrence of the thickest development of basal Tertiary sediments on Mull. It contains sandstones and mudstones with the evidence from the wind-worn quartz grains and rounded chalk fragments in the sandstone indicating deposition in an arid, desert environment. Above the sandstones is a persistent purple mudstone which occurs at the base of the Tertiary lavas. The mudstone is thought to be formed by lateritic decomposition of an early volcanic ash. |
