Description: | The plateau country is typified by its scenery, consisting for the most part of low, broad hills, table-topped, with the hillsides stepped by terrace or trap features. Across the Sound of Mull is the Ardnamurchan peninsula, a Tertiary central igneous complex composed largely of volcanic vents, ring-dykes and cone-sheets which are arranged in concentric series around three centres of intrusion. Ben Hiant is part of the Centre 1 and consists of volcanic vents filled with agglomerates that are traversed by massive cone-sheets and major intrusions. Ardnamurchan Point is on left, Ben Hiant is in the centre and the entrance to Loch Sunart is on right. General view of the Tertiary plateau basalt country. The description is for the whole panorama. |
