Description: Craigleith Tree (Pitys Withami) of the Family Lyginopteridacae. Fossil tree found in Craigleith Quarry and now in the garden of Rockville, Murrayfield, Edinburgh. This fossil tree was found in Craigleith Quarry in 1840 and is 7.3 m. long by 3 m. diameter. It was moved to a garden in Rockville, a villa in Murrayfield in 1854. Several fossil trees have been found in Craigleith Quarry, the earliest in 1826 and the latest in 1873. Six of the trees were found in close proximity at the west end of the quarry, some were cylindrical and others flattened. As the trees have no branches it is thought that they were carried to their final resting place by flood waters that had stripped the branches off and then deposited them in sand or quicksand. Rapid burial is indicated by the good preservation, i.e. they were buried before the wood had time to rot.
