| Description: | Maiden Paps' from Shankend Station, about 10 km. south of Hawick, Roxburgh. Basaltic intrusions of Lower Carboniferous age. These prominent features are small roughly circular plugs of basalt intruded into Carboniferous red sandstones and siltstones during Lower Carboniferous times. There are several varieties of basalt present in the various intrusions (Craiglockhart, Dalmeny, Dunsapie and Jedburgh), each distinguished by differences in minerals present as phenocrysts and groundmass. Craiglockhart-type basalt has large phenocrysts of olivine and augite, but few of plagioclase. Dalmeny-type has numerous microphenocrysts of olivine, some augites and occasional labradorite (plagioclase). Dunsapie-type has large phenocrysts of plagioclase, augite and olivine. Jedburgh-type has small phenocrysts of labradorite and a few small olivines, with augite restricted to the groundmass. |
