| Description: | Smailholm Tower near Smailholm, Roxburgh. Basalt intrusion of Lower Carboniferous age. Crags of basalt forming part of roughly circular volcanic neck intruded into the 'Kelso Traps'. These are basalt lavas of Carboniferous age thought to be contemporary with the Birrenswark Lavas further to the south-west. This part of the eastern Borders has many igneous intrusions which are generally harder and more resistant to erosion than the surrounding country rocks. Rocky eminences such as these could be more easily defended in time of conflict and were commonly used as the site of fortified tower houses such as this 15th century example at Smailholm. |
