Description: East coast of Mousa Island, Shetland Isles. Entrance to broch. The broch is built with flaggy sandstones Old Red Sandstone age. Much of the Old Red Sandstone of Mousa comprises thin beds of fine-grained sandstone alternating with siltstone and mudstone. The condition of the broch, which is still virtually in its original state, is a fine tribute to the suitability as a building stone and the durability of the flaggy sandstones of south-east Shetland. Cavities between the slabs are used as nesting sites by storm petrels.
