Description: | East coast of Mousa Island, Shetland Isles. Broch built with flaggy sandstones, Old Red Sandstone age. Much of the Old Red Sandstone of Mousa comprises thin beds of fine-grained sandstone alternating with siltstone and mudstone. The condition of the broch, which is still virtually in its original state, is a fine tribute to the suitability as a building stone and the durability of the flaggy sandstones of south-east Shetland. Cavities between the slabs are used as nesting sites by storm petrels. |
