| Description: | Glenalla Fell, 3 m. south 30 degrees west of Straiton. Looking west across Water of Girvan from near Craigencaillie. A large laccolithic sill of acid biotite-porphyrite intruded in the Lower Old Red Sandstone (Lower Devonian). The Lower Old Red Sandstone rocks are below the sill on the left, the south of the hill, and above it on the right (north). The intrusion is of Lower Old Red Sandstone age and is one of many similar fine-grained acid igneous rock intrusions that are relatively resistant to erosion compared to the surrounding rocks and because of this form a prominent rounded hill. They are particularly common in a belt 6-12 km. wide on the north-west side of the Southern Upland Fault, other examples include Tinto Hill near Biggar and Garleffin Fell. |
