Description: Loch Coulter, 8.0 km. south-south-west of Stirling, from its north-west corner, Stirlingshire. A former glacial drift dammed loch. The loch (now a reservoir) in boulder clay lies in a hollow between an escarpment formed of a dolerite sill (in the centre, distance) and the dip-slope of lavas (behind the observer). The pipe-track from the outlet (in the centre), passing to the right of the visible escarpment, expected to encounter dolerite but met only boulder clay, thus proving the loch to be drift dammed. During the retreat of the glaciers, this loch was deeper, and had outflow to south-west.
