Description: Bruce's Castle ruins, Castleton, 8.0 km. south-east of Stirling, Stirlingshire. The escarpment of Upper Carboniferous Millstone Grit sandstone rises above a small valley, possibly formed for postglacial drainage. Such escarpments which are generally rare in the Millstone Grit of Scotland are relatively common in this vicinity, at the same level. The waves of the '100 ft.' beach sea have probably here removed the drift mantle which elsewhere conceals similar escarpments.
