Description: | Craigforth, 1.6 km. west-north-west of Stirling, from south-south-west, Stirlingshire. Wooded escarpment of Lower Carboniferous lavas (Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation), dipping east (right) and forming an 'island' in the plain of the 15.2 m. (50 ft.) raised beach. The latter would have been on the shore of the postglacial Firth of Forth, then a very much more substantial estuary than today. Scotland was quite active volcanically during the early Carboniferous period, with huge volumes of basalt lava extruded, in places up to hundreds of metres thick. |
