Description: Loudoun Hill, Darvel, Ayrshire. Looking west. Loudoun Hill, a plug of trachyandesite of Carboniferous age intruding microporphyritic olivine basalt lavas of the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation (also Carboniferous). Centre and foreground shows glaciofluvial gravels at 213 m. level in process of erosion by River Irvine. The abrupt fall from the 213 m. gravels to the 152 m. terraces of the River Irvine can be seen on the left. The small haystacks in the fields are a reminder of former methods of harvesting fodder crops. Many of the extensive glaciofluvial sand and gravel deposits in the Darvel area, including these ones, have been worked commercially for several decades.
