Loudoun Hill, a plug of trachyandesite of Carboniferous age intruding microporphyritic olivine basalt lavas of the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation (also Carboniferous). The foreground shows extensive glaciofluvial deposits close to the watershed between the Avon and Irvine valleys, draining eastwards and westwards respectively. Many of the extensive glaciofluvial sand and gravel deposits in the Darvel area, including these ones, have been worked commercially for several decades. |
