Description: | Loudoun Hill and River Irvine from south-west, Ayrshire. Loudoun Hill, a plug of trachyandesite of Carboniferous age intruding microporphyritic olivine basalt lavas of the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation (also Carboniferous). Looking towards the north-east across fluvioglacial terraces eroded by the present-day River Irvine. Sadly, the magnificent multi-arched railway viaduct in the photograph has now been demolished. Loudoun Hill, as a prominent hill overlooking the Irvine Valley, was an obvious strategic defence locality in earlier days. This was recognized by the Romans who built a signal station on its top. |
