Description: Big Hill of the Baing, 4.0 km. south-east of Straiton, Ayrshire. Viewed from the south-west. Ordovician conglomerate. The prominent ridge of the Big Hill of the Baing consists of an elongated faulted outcrop of resistant Benan Conglomerate, a boulder conglomerate of Llanvirn (Ordovician) age. The bare grassy hillside is typical of sheep country in Scotland where new trees cannot develop naturally because of grazing pressure. This outcrop is an isolated inlier of Benan Conglomerate and can be correlated with the much more extensive main outcrop in the Girvan - Ballantrae area. The conglomerate is a major unit which occurs towards the base of the Girvan Ordovician - Silurian cover sequence.
