Description: Greenan Castle, shore 4.0 km. south-south-west of Ayr, Ayrshire. Bedded volcanic ash. The castle stands on a knoll of bedded volcanic ash, 15-20 m. thick, overlying and interbedded with sandstones of the Ballagan Formation, dipping approximately north-east. The Greenan Castle agglomerate is very similar in composition to that within the nearby Heads of Ayr volcanic vent and was probably derived from there. The Heads of Ayr vent is Carboniferous in age and roughly contemporaneous with the extrusion of the Clyde Plateau lavas further north.
