Description: Heads of Ayr, 5.6 km. south-west of Ayr, Ayrshire. Volcanic vent. Heads of Ayr volcanic vent from east. The vent cuts cementstones (fine-grained dolomitic limestone), grey and green marly shales and red and green sandstones of the Ballagan Formation, Inverclyde Group (formerly Cementstone Group of the Calciferous Sandstone Measures). Much of the vent is infilled with basic agglomerate but there are also blocks of country rock which have fallen in from the sides. The Heads of Ayr vent is Carboniferous in age and roughly contemporaneous with the extrusion of the Clyde Plateau lavas further north.
