Description: | Island of Iona and village, from the south, Argyllshire. The village, in the left distance, is built on the 6.4 m. (25 ft.) raised beach plain. Rocks in centre middle ground are part of the modern wave-cut platform. The land on the right horizon is part of the island of Mull, with the Sound of Iona the intervening stretch of sea. Most of the island is composed of Lewisian basement gneiss (Pre-Cambrian). Marble was extensively quarried on Iona at one time. |
