Description: Rubha na h-Uamha, cliff north-west of Loch Scridain, south-west Mull, Argyllshire. A close-up of 'Maculloch's Tree' a fossil tree, one of several in the area found at the base of the Tertiary columnar basalt lavas. The cast of the tree is 1.5 metres wide and is largely filled with breccia and 'white trap' and charred wood. The lower part of the tree is partially silicified with wood containing glistening quartz crystals. Outside the silicified centre there used to be a c. 5 cm. layer of soft black wood but this has long since disappeared due to collectors. As the columnar jointing approaches the tree the columns turn to meet it everywhere at right angles.
