Description: Carlingheugh Bay, 2.8 km. north-east of Arbroath, looking south, Angus. A wave-cut platform in nearly horizontal sandstones and conglomerates of Upper Old Red Sandstone (Upper Devonian) age. The bulk of marine coastal erosion is caused by the power of the waves. The rate of erosion depends on the hardness of the rocks and the abundance of joints and cracks. Softer belts form the bays while the harder more resistant rocks form the headlands often with features such as stacks and islets (see the headland in the distance). As the coast is eroded back the waves cut a shallow gently-dipping platform as in the foreground. With an increasing width of platform, by the time the waves reach the cliffs much of the energy is dissipated and so erosion is reduced, note how the cliffs in the bay are becoming vegetated compared to the headlands where erosion is still very active.
