Description: | Valley of the River Clyde at Hazlebank, 4.8 km. west-north-west of Lanark, Lanarkshire. The broad valley of the River Clyde is here excavated along the junction between intrusive felsite, on the left, and Lower Devonian sedimentary rocks of the Lanark Group (formerly Lower Old Red Sandstone) on the right. The river now runs along the contact between the two rock types. The contact between two different rock types is commonly a zone of weakness exploited by weathering. Where one of the two is an igneous intrusion, this can be due to contact effects with the country rock, including brecciation, jointing, veining, contrasting chemistry etc. |
