| Description: | Dumgoyne (left) and Dumfoyne (right) from the south at the west end of Strathblane Hills (Campsie Hills), Stirlingshire. Two Lower Carboniferous volcanic vents. Part of a panorama with C02105. The description is for the whole panorama. Volcanic vents filled with agglomerate and basalt, outlying from the Campsie volcanic plateau and standing out above the comparatively weak strata of the Cementstone Group (Ballagan Beds) of Lower Carboniferous age through which they pierce. The vents are evidence of the existence of eruptive centres for the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation lavas and extend along the prominent 2-3 km. wide zone trending north-east - south-west. This zone extends 27 km. from Fintry to Dumbarton. A typical ice-moulded U-shaped valley between the hills. |
