Description: | During the Caledonian Orogeny, deep-seated earth movements reached a climax towards the end of the Silurian, the geosynclinal sediments seen here were compressed, folded and faulted from north-north-west to south-south-east and elevated to form a chain of mountains. By the Devonian the Silurian rocks had been moulded by sub-aerial erosion into a landcape of hills and plains, onto this surface Devonian andesitic lavas were extruded such as those seen at St. Abb's Head. A large volcanic vent, the source for these lavas is at St. Abbs. Rock platform and cliffs cut by sea out of highly folded Silurian greywackes and shales. The vertical cliffs forming the headland (St. Abb's Head) are due to the more massive Lower Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) volcanic rocks. |
