Description: The Helmsdale Valley in the vicinity of Caen, Sutherland. The flood plain of the River Helmsdale with a series of river terraces and what was once thought to be part of a late-glacial raised beach. On the north side of the river at Caen, right side of the photograph, is a terrace broken up into a series of mounds at a height of nearly 80 ft. that was once thought to be a fragment of a late-glacial marine raised beach that is common lower down the valley. This terrace has not been proved to be of marine origin and may be the result of the river working down to the level of the raised beach.
