Caption: Mouth and lower portion of the Helmsdale River Valley, Sutherland.
Description: The area below the railway station is a river terrace, the area to the right, and the flat area opposite and extending round the coast to the north is the raised marine beach deposits of late Devensian age forming the 100 ft. raised beach. The photo is an excellent view of Helmsdale in c. 1914. The late-glacial 100 ft. raised beach on further side of river, rising above the present flood plain of the Helmsdale River. The hill in the distance is composed of the Helmsdale Granite. The right part of a panorama with C01985 left and C01986 in the centre.
