Description: | 0.8 km. east of Helmsdale, Sutherland. The late-glacial 100 ft. raised beach at East Helmsdale. The right part of a panorama with C01983. The flat fields in the middle distance on the right are on the late-glacial raised beach platform. Behind is a line of old cliffs now degraded and covered in vegetation. The hill on the top right behind the houses is formed from the Helmsdale Granite, one of the Caledonian Orogeny 'Newer Granites'. It is separated from the Old Red Sandstone rocks that underly most of the 100 ft raised beach and foreshore by the major Helmsdale Fault that runs roughly parallel to the coast. |
