| Description: | The Kimmeridgian sequence in East Sutherland consists of thinly-bedded bituminous shales with fossils indicating deposition in fairly deep water, interbedded with boulder beds which range in thickness from 1 m. to 10 m. The boulder beds consist of angular blocks and boulders varying in diameter from a few centimetres to the 'fallen stack' which measures 34 m. x 27 m. x 9 m. The boulders are set in a sandy matrix with fossils indicative of shallow water or even a deltaic environment. The Helmsdale Boulder Bed (Jurassic, Kimmeridgian age) with the famous misnamed gigantic 'fallen stack of Portgower' of Middle Old Red Sandstone age. |
